Central bank promises to bail out regionally important banks

ST. PETERSBURG, Jul 5 (PRIME) -- Health of Russia’s largest banks is more or less good, but the central bank may have to bail out the banks that are important for some regions, Deputy Chairman Vasily Pozdyshev told reporters late on Thursday.

“I don’t’ rule that out, and it is true that the financial health of the largest banks has improved. This is reality for any banking system, that a bank that is not systemically important for the country but important for one region may need to have its financial health improved,” he said.

“If any bank that is important for this or that region suffers from financial difficulties, and we decide to improve its financial health due to its importance for a region, this should be a shock to no one. This will not create a negative informational background for the whole banking system, and it will not have the scale we had in 2017,” he said.
